If the motion of the ocean or the turn of a plane leaves you running for the nearest bathroom you’re not alone.
Motion sickness is suffered by many people and can be massively inconvenient, but what actually is it? And does Reliefband really work?
Motion sickness is caused by the brain trying to process too much information when moving and the result is a problem equalizing a very intricate balance on the ears.
Ears help us maintain our balance. They are part of a network called the vestibular system. The semicircular canal helps us detect changes in direction.
The saccules and utricles help us maintain our position when we stand up or lie down. When something disrupts it, such as travel, it can take a while for the brain to send the right signals to the ears.
Women are generally more prone to motion sickness than men. Children are also more sensitive to motion sickness than adults.
Pregnancy, menstrual cycles, and oral contraceptives may increase risk. Migraine headaches may cause symptoms similar to those of motion sickness so be sure to check out any unusual symptoms with a professional.
Vestibular disease may result in dizziness or imbalance. People who have had previous episodes of motion sickness may have an increased likelihood of experiencing symptoms again.
People who suffer from motion sickness usually feel ill if they’re traveling or riding in a car. Sometimes, this feeling comes without any reason.
Some people may also experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, sweating, headache, dizziness, fatigue, and/or weakness.
Reliefband is a wristband designed to reduce motion sickness. Relief bands work by stimulating the vagus nerve in your wrist.
Reliefband’s wearable technology puts you into control of treating nausea, vomiting, and retching associated with motion sickness without drugs and delays.
When it’s turned on, this device sends out a specific pattern of pulses that stimulates a nerve under the skin.
These pulses create a message that travels through the body’s nervous systems to the brain, which controls nausea, retching and vomiting. This area of the brain is known as the dorsal Vagus Complex.
The pulses calm and normalize the nerve signals that travel along the Vagus Nerve from the brain to the stomach. This relieves the effects of nausea, retching, and vomiting due to motion or morning sickness.
The relief band actually has its roots in acupuncture.
Acupuncture had a bad reputation in the past, but today, it’s considered a legitimate treatment option. It was used by ancient cultures, but when the scientific method came around, it became outdated.
Today, acupuncturists use modern technology and techniques such as laser therapy to treat patients.
Acupuncture is based on the ancient Chinese belief that there are invisible energy lines running throughout the body.
These meridians are believed to flow along pathways called channels. There are over two thousand different acupuncture points scattered across the body.
Some people believe that these points correspond to organs or other body parts. However, this theory is controversial because many believe it contradicts modern science.
So, does this ancient approach to motion sickness actually work?
Everyone is different so it’s best to decide for yourself if it works or not.
Acupressure points are located on both sides of your body (left and right) and can be pressed with steady pressure to your comfort level for 30-60 seconds.
Engaging in slow and relaxed breathing, while pressing the points, helps relax your mind and body and can ease nausea.
Repeating this move two to three times per week is recommended or use the Reliefband to access the points when you start to feel travel sick.
Even if you aren’t completely certain where the point is, search around a bit for the location that seems like it requires your attention. Chances might be that giving attention to that region will be useful for you!
Alternatives For Motion Sickness
If you want to use an additional treatment to the Reliefband, there are different ways to avoid motion sickness.
When traveling by ship, people should look out the windows (see also “How To Clean Plexiglass Windows“) instead of staring at the interior of the cabin. Car passengers should sit in the backseat and look out the window.
Reading books while driving is also bad because it causes dizziness so is best avoided.
Try to sit in the center of a large vehicle, such as an airplane or a bus. Also, try to avoid eating before traveling. Avoid drinking alcohol for 24 hours before traveling but drink plenty of water while traveling.
Relaxation exercises may help reduce the anxiety associated with motion sickness and sometimes professional counseling may be helpful.
Another alternative is a nausea treatment device that is a battery-powered wrap resembling a travel pillow. It targets specific nerves in the neck to help alleviate nausea.
No conclusions have been made on whether targeting these areas helped alleviate nausea from motion sickness but it’s certainly worth trying.
If you decide to try over the counter motion sickness pills they work best when they’re taken before you get sick such as before the journey.
Herbs and supplements are often sold as effective treatments for motion sickness, but there are no reliable studies supporting this claim.
Ginger has long been known as an effective natural treatment for nausea. Try taking some ginger tea or ginger sweets when motion sickness takes hold.
Peppermint can help with nausea symptoms in motion sickness. Black horehound is sometimes taken by people who experience motion sickness, but there are no scientific studies showing whether it is safe or if it is effective.
Peppermint interacts with some medications and may be dangerous to people using certain medications. Black horehounds may be harmful to people with Parkinson’s or schizophrenia so be cautious when selecting remedies.
However you choose to treat your travel sickness, don’t suffer in silence, having an understanding travel partner can make all the difference between an unpleasant travel experience and a tolerable one if you get sick.
Trying a range of remedies will enable you to find a solution that works for you.
